Simone Tata

As the chairman of the company Trent Limited (a Tata Enterprise) she has to ensure that the company runs smoothly and that everybody does his/her job well. For this, she looks out for highly qualified professionals and youngsters who are ready to absorb new technology and grow in the company.

Retailing has been one of her areas of interest for a long time and she had wanted to get into this new line of business. Her foray into retailing through 'Westside' has been quite a different experience for her from her earlier Lakme days. This new venture is basically a one-stop family shop. It follows a worldwide pattern of modern retailing, that is, making a lot of things available to the customer under one roof. She finds it quite exciting because in this business one is much closer to the market and to the customer's needs and requirements.

It so happened that the UK-based departmental store chain 'Littlewoods International' in Bangalore was planning to withdraw its operations in India. The Tatas acquired the interest to the store from the parent company, Trent Limited, and re launched 'Littlewoods' as 'Westside' in April 1998. Soon after it was launched in Hyderabad in December 1998, in Chennai in March 1999 and finally in Mumbai in May 1999.

Simone Tata's work calls for a lot of travelling, both within and outside the country. She has quite a few plans for expansion and her company is looking out for more locations to start retailing there. Once the location is fixed, there's plenty of work to be done: getting the architects to do up the place, setting up the equipment and putting together the entire store. All this takes up about five to six months.

She began working many years ago, not realising that she was making a career for herself. She was not ruthlessly ambitious or conscious about a career. But having started work, she just went on and handled one responsibility after another, giving her best to it until the job was done. Today she wonders what she would have done if she were not working. She also believes that every woman should have some interests in life. She should think in terms of self-enhancement and self-education and what she wants out of life. A woman should be true to herself.
